Cessation Tools for Prenatal Providers

According to a Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAM) report in the Sept. 29, 2009 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, health care providers and public health systems across the nation are doing a poor job of reducing smoking prevalence during pregnancy. Not one site achieved the Health People 2010 objective of reducing the prevalence of prenatal smoking to one percent.

New resources are available to improve the health of pregnant and postpartum women and their children, including a customized version of the 2As and an R (Ask, Advise and Refer) tobacco cessation model and resource lists for families and providers. These resources are designed for front-line health educators and health care providers in addressing tobacco cessation and the eliminating secondhand smoke exposure among pregnant and postpartum clients. STEPP strongly encourages grantees to share these resources and to adopt the 2As and an R protocol among those serving pregnant and postpartum women as part of local systems’ integration work.

The following resources are available under “Helpful Downloads” in this section:

• Smoking Cessation Protocol
• Smoking Cessation Resources for Women and Their Families
• Smoking Cessation Resources for Professionals

Members of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Prenatal Smoking Cessation Project are dedicated to improving health outcomes among this priority population. These new customized resources are a product of their work.

The Partnership includes the following programs: Prenatal Plus, Nurse Family Partnership, Women, Infants and Children (WIC), and the State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (STEPP). The goal of the Prenatal Smoking Cessation Project is to coordinate activities and resources to support prenatal smoking cessation efforts in Colorado.
